Monthly Lectures

Since our beginning as a separate organization in 1982, GANS has held occasional public lectures.  These lectures were occasional as there was interest, and the lectures were naturally person-to-person.  Indeed, part of the reason for the choice of our present quarters was to have a room large enough for delivering lectures in-person.

We started video-recording our lectures from time-to-time as seemed desirable.  The oldest lecture videos we have available are from 2014, when we recorded two lectures.

As we grew into the Monthly Lectures and the video-recording, we went full-bore with them in 2023.  That year, we held 7 Monthly Lectures - Jan-May, nothing in the summer months of June, July, or August, resumed again in September, a break for the Annual Heritage Lecture in October, resumed the Monthly Lecture in November, then nothing in December, all of them live in-person and video-recorded and made available to members.  In 2024, we used the same calendar and added live-streaming for all of the lectures.  We have continued this live-streaming going forward.

The Monthly lectures are now delivered both in-person, where they are open to the public, and live-streamed to members only.  Typically, the lecturers are delivered by residents in Nova Scotia, although occasionally from one of the other neighbouring provinces in the Maritimes, sometimes by genealogists, sometimes by local historians.  We try to cover a range of themes, with particular appeals to different segments of society and sub-cultures.
